Background:

  • Alpha-mannosidosis is an inherited lysosomal storage disease.
  • Obligatory heterozygotes for alpha-mannosidosis were used in breeding experiments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report clinical and pathological findings of alpha-mannosidosis in cattle.
  • To investigate phenotypic variation of alpha-mannosidosis within and between Angus and Galloway breeds.

Main Methods:

  • Conducted breeding experiments from 1984 to 1986.
  • Observed 69 calves born to heterozygote parents.
  • Diagnosed 16 cases of alpha-mannosidosis.

Main Results:

  • Reported findings in 16 affected calves (8 Angus x Angus, 4 Galloway x Angus, 4 Galloway x Galloway).
  • Thirteen calves showed neonatal neurological signs; 3 were stillborn.
  • 10 calves died within the first week; 3 survived for extended periods (40, 80, 210 days).

Conclusions:

  • Significant variation in alpha-mannosidosis phenotypic expression exists.
  • Disease severity differs within and between Angus and Galloway cattle breeds.
