The Ilizarov external fixation system: the new perioperative challenge

1. All Ilizarov components should be dried well after decontamination and protected with a layer of silicone spray to prevent corrosion and rust formation. 2. Never immerse the dynamometric wire tensioner in saline. Never store the wire tensioner with the handle turned fully to the left or right position. 3. Preoperatively, the Ilizarov patient must be psychologically prepared for the visual impact of the device and the possibly long duration of the healing process if lengthening is performed. 4. Wire site care should begin 24 hours postoperatively. The patient or family member must be instructed on wire site care and give successful return demonstrations prior to discharge.
