Summary

Pregnancy can worsen neuromyelitis optica (NMO) in women, with higher relapse rates post-delivery and increased disability. Obstetricians should be aware of these risks for NMO patients.

  • To document the Brazilian experience with pregnancies in women diagnosed with NMO.
  • To analyze the impact of pregnancy on the disease course of NMO.

  • Inclusion of cases of NMO in pregnant women or those developing NMO postpartum.
  • Data collected by neurologists responsible for patient care.

  • Seventeen pregnancies were analyzed (16 full-term, 1 miscarriage).
  • A significant increase in demyelinating event relapse rates was observed in the first trimester postpartum.
