Summary

This study found that Yo-Yo intermittent recovery tests (IR1 and IR2) strongly correlate with repeated sprint ability (RSA) and maximal sprint speeds in soccer players. These findings suggest a combined Yo-Yo and RSA test can efficiently assess soccer players' intermittent exercise capacity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the correlations between Yo-Yo IR1 and IR2 performances and maximal sprinting speed, repeated sprint ability (RSA), and submaximal heart rates (HRs) in high-level soccer players.
  • To determine if a combined testing protocol could efficiently assess intermittent exercise capacity.
  • To evaluate the reproducibility of submaximal heart rate measures during Yo-Yo tests.

Main Methods:

  • 57 high-level soccer players completed Yo-Yo IR1 and IR2 tests, maximal sprint tests (10, 20, 35m), and repeated sprint ability (RSA) tests (7x35m).
  • Submaximal heart rates were recorded at 2 and 4 minutes during the Yo-Yo tests.
  • Statistical analyses included correlation coefficients and adjusted ordinary least square (OLS) regressions.

Main Results:

  • Strong correlations were found between Yo-Yo IR1 and IR2 performances (r=0.753).
  • Moderate to large correlations existed between Yo-Yo tests and sprint/RSA performances (e.g., 35m sprint r=-0.371 for IR2; RSA 35m r=-0.552 for IR2).
  • Submaximal heart rates during Yo-Yo tests showed moderate to large correlations with Yo-Yo performance and were reproducible.

Conclusions:

  • Yo-Yo IR1 and IR2 performances are highly correlated with sprint and RSA performances in soccer players.
  • A combined Yo-Yo test and RSA test protocol can efficiently assess intermittent exercise capacity.
  • Submaximal heart rate measures during Yo-Yo tests are reliable and can be used for frequent, time-efficient athlete monitoring.
