    Summary

Mitochondria are permeable to chloride ions, contrary to previous beliefs. This study demonstrates chloride uptake and electrogenic transport across the mitochondrial inner membrane, similar to other biological membranes.

    Area of Science:

    • Mitochondrial Biology
    • Membrane Transport
    • Ion Permeability

    Background:

    • The mitochondrial inner membrane was traditionally considered impermeable to chloride ions.
    • Other biological membranes exhibit significant chloride permeability.
    • Reevaluation of mitochondrial chloride permeability is necessary.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To reevaluate the permeability of the mitochondrial inner membrane to chloride ions.
    • To investigate the nature of mitochondrial chloride transport.

    Main Methods:

    • Measurement of passive mitochondrial swelling in isotonic chloride solutions.
    • Utilized an uncoupling agent to facilitate ion transport.
    • Experiments conducted on mitochondria from rat liver and beef heart.

    Main Results:

    • Mitochondria demonstrated a clear uptake of various chloride salts under experimental conditions.
    • Mitochondrial chloride transport was identified as electrogenic.
    • Transmembrane movement of chloride ions was observed.

    Conclusions:

    • The mitochondrial inner membrane is permeable to chloride ions.
    • Mitochondrial chloride transport is electrogenic, similar to other halides.
    • The mitochondrial inner membrane shares permeability to chloride with other biological membranes.
