Birth Control Methods01:22

Birth Control Methods

Vasectomy is a surgical form of male sterilization that involves severing and sealing the vasa deferentia, preventing sperm from mixing with semen during ejaculation. Because a vasectomy does not impact the testes' ability to produce testosterone, hormone levels, libido, and sexual function generally remain unchanged. While vasectomy is highly effective in preventing pregnancy, with a success rate near 99.85%, rare cases of recanalization (spontaneous reconnection) can occur. Although vasectomy...

Types of Biopharmaceutical Studies: Controlled and Non-Controlled Approaches

Biopharmaceutical studies constitute a vital field aiming to enhance drug delivery methods and refine therapeutic approaches, drawing upon diverse interdisciplinary knowledge. In research methodologies, the choice between controlled and non-controlled studies significantly influences the study's reliability and accuracy.
Non-controlled studies, commonly employed for initial exploration, lack a control group, rendering them susceptible to biases and external influences. In contrast, controlled...
Intrauterine Drug Delivery Systems01:21

Intrauterine Drug Delivery Systems

Controlled-release systems for intravaginal and intrauterine drug delivery have been developed primarily for the administration of contraceptive steroid hormones. These delivery routes circumvent first-pass hepatic metabolism, thereby enhancing bioavailability and allowing for reduced systemic dosages compared to oral administration. Such approaches contribute to improved therapeutic efficacy and patient compliance, particularly in long-term contraceptive regimens.Intravaginal Drug Delivery...
Gonadal and Placental Hormones01:24

Gonadal and Placental Hormones

The gonads, namely the testes in males and the ovaries in females, are pivotal in producing gonadal hormones that orchestrate the intricate processes of sexual development and reproduction.
In males, testosterone is the primary gonadal androgen. It plays a central role in the maturation of male reproductive organs — the penis and testes. Additionally, testosterone is instrumental in the development of secondary sexual characteristics — a deep voice as well as facial and pubic hair growth — and...
Reproductive Cloning01:27

Reproductive Cloning

Reproductive cloning is the process of producing a genetically identical copy—a clone—of an entire organism. While clones can be produced by splitting an early embryo—similar to what happens naturally with identical twins—cloning of adult animals is usually done by a process called somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT).
Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer
In SCNT, an egg cell is taken from an animal and its nucleus is removed, creating an enucleated egg. Then a somatic cell—any cell that is not a sex...
Infertility in Females01:28

Infertility in Females

Female infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after a year of regular, unprotected intercourse and affects about 10–15% of couples worldwide. The primary cause of female infertility is ovulatory disorders, which hinder the release of eggs. These disorders can be classified as hypothalamic amenorrhea, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), premature ovarian failure, and hyperprolactinemic anovulation disorders.
Endometriosis, a condition characterized by abnormal growth of endometrial...

Summary

Reproductive life plan (RLP) information significantly improved women's reproductive knowledge, including the importance of folic acid intake. This approach appears feasible for promoting reproductive health in women.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Health
  • Health Education
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Many women possess insufficient knowledge regarding reproduction and preconception health behaviors.
  • Highly educated women often postpone childbearing, potentially impacting fertility.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if reproductive life plan (RLP)-based information during contraceptive counseling enhances women's reproductive knowledge, particularly concerning folic acid intake.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving 299 women was conducted.
  • The intervention group received RLP-based information alongside standard care.
  • Knowledge assessment was performed at baseline and a 2-month follow-up via questionnaires and interviews.

Main Results:

  • The intervention group showed a significant increase in reproductive knowledge scores compared to control groups (P < 0.001).
  • Awareness of folic acid intake importance increased significantly in the intervention group (22%) versus controls (3% and 1%; P < 0.001).
  • Women in the intervention group also expressed a greater desire to have their last child earlier.

Conclusions:

  • RLP-based information is a feasible tool for enhancing reproductive health knowledge.
  • Findings suggest potential benefits for reproductive health promotion, though caution is advised when generalizing to all women due to the study population (university students).
