Infectious diseases of poverty, including neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), are common in poor populations. A new journal, Infectious Diseases of Poverty (IDP), will advance research on these diseases and poverty.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Tropical Medicine
- Global Health
Background:
- Infectious diseases disproportionately affect impoverished populations worldwide.
- Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a subset of these, often linked to specific transmission routes involving vectors or intermediate hosts.
- A deeper understanding of the interplay between poverty and infectious disease is crucial for effective control strategies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To introduce the journal Infectious Diseases of Poverty (IDP) as a platform for research.
- To foster a better understanding of the relationship between infectious diseases and poverty.
- To contribute to the prioritization of control plans for these diseases.
Main Methods:
- The journal IDP will publish original and empirical research.
- It will feature analyses of disease burdens, their geographical distribution, and research needs.
- Scoping reviews and highlights of trans-disciplinary work will also be included.
Main Results:
- The launch of IDP signifies a dedicated effort to address infectious diseases of poverty.
- The journal aims to explore new research avenues and facilitate knowledge sharing.
- It will cover work from all global regions.
Conclusions:
- IDP provides a vital platform for advancing research on infectious diseases of poverty and NTDs.
- The journal supports the "One health - One world" concept by encouraging trans-disciplinary approaches.
- By publishing diverse research, IDP seeks to inform and improve global health strategies for poverty-related diseases.
