  • Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components (hypertension, impaired glucose, dyslipidemia, obesity, inflammation) increase cognitive decline risk.
  • Dietary interventions preventing metabolic disorders may also prevent cognitive decline.
  • This study investigated a diet's impact on cognitive function in overweight, healthy individuals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the cognitive effects of a multifunctional diet designed to target MetS risk markers.
  • To evaluate cognitive performance in relation to cardiometabolic risk variables.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, controlled crossover study with 44 healthy adults (50-73 years, BMI 25-33).
  • Participants consumed an active diet (AD) with anti-inflammatory foods and a control diet (CD) for 4 weeks each, separated by a washout period.
  • Cognitive tests were administered in fasting and postprandial states after each diet period.

Main Results:

  • The active diet (AD) significantly improved performance in auditory-verbal learning (recognition) and selective attention/working memory tests compared to the control diet (CD).
  • Cognitive performance showed inverse associations with cardiometabolic risk markers (cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure) and cardiovascular risk scores.
  • Cognitive performance was positively associated with apolipoprotein A1 levels.

Conclusions:

  • Dietary characteristics can modulate cognitive performance.
  • A link exists between cardiometabolic risk markers and cognitive function in healthy individuals.
  • Diet-based prevention of metabolic disturbances related to MetS is supported by these findings.
