Insights
Ultrasound (US) diagnosis of intussusception in children is effective in tropical regions. This study found US positively diagnosed intussusception in 80% of pediatric cases, aiding clinical decisions.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Surgery
- Diagnostic Imaging
- Gastroenterology
Background:
- Intussusception is a frequent cause of intestinal obstruction in children.
- Classic signs and symptoms are not universally present, complicating diagnosis.
- This study evaluates ultrasound (US) diagnosis and surgical findings in children with intussusception in a tropical developing economy.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound (US) in pediatric intussusception.
- To correlate US findings with operative findings in children.
- To report experience from a tertiary health facility in a tropical developing country.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of pediatric intussusception cases over 8 years (January 2004 - December 2011).
- Inclusion of children admitted with intussusception to a tertiary health facility.
- Analysis of ultrasound (US) diagnostic results and operative findings.
Main Results:
- 25 out of 41 children with intussusception were studied (M:F ratio 2.2:1).
- Median age was 6.0 ± 5.57 months (range 3 months - 7 years).
- Ultrasound (US) positively diagnosed intussusception in 20 cases (80% accuracy).
Conclusions:
- Ultrasound (US) demonstrates significant utility in diagnosing pediatric intussusception.
- US can enhance diagnostic confidence for clinicians managing intussusception.
- Findings support the use of US in resource-limited tropical settings.
Background:
Intussusception is one of the more common causes of intestinal obstruction in children. The diagnosis may be based mainly on clinical features; however, there are no classic signs and symptoms that are common to all cases. This study reports our experience at US diagnosis and operation findings of children with intussusceptions in a tropical developing economy.
Materials And Methods:
This was an 8 years retrospective review of intussusceptions in children in a tertiary health facility in a tropical developing country from January 2004 to December 2011.
Results:
Twenty-five out of 41 children (M:F = 2.2:1) admitted with intussusceptions within the period were studied. The median age was 6.0 ± 5.57 months (range 3 months- 7 years). US positively diagnosed intussusceptions in 20 (80%) cases.
Conclusion:
US can increase diagnostic confidence in intussusceptions.

The abdominal examination is a cornerstone of clinical medicine, serving as a critical tool in diagnosing various gastrointestinal (GI) diseases. It involves a systematic approach that includes inspection and auscultation, each with distinct yet complementary roles in assessing the abdomen. This article will delve into these two primary methods healthcare professionals use to examine the abdomen.
Inspection of the Abdomen
The first step in any abdominal examination is inspection.
