Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) and hyperglycemia in Asian patients diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.
  • To assess the prevalence and timing of hyperglycemia onset in this patient group.
  • To inform clinical practice regarding glucose monitoring for Asian patients initiating SGAs.

Main Methods:

  • A health quality improvement project tracked 266 patients newly started on SGAs over two years.
  • Fasting plasma glucose levels were monitored at baseline, 4 weeks, 12 weeks, and 12 months.
