Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Behavioral Science
  • Health Promotion

Background:

  • Physical inactivity contributes to global adult health problems.
  • Walking is a feasible strategy to increase physical activity (PA).
  • Text messaging (TMs) shows promise for promoting walking but requires further investigation into development and acceptability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the acceptability of TMs for increasing walking among low-income adults.
  • To develop a participant-generated database of TMs using photos to prompt discussion and promote walking.

Main Methods:

  • Three focus groups with low-income, sedentary adults were conducted in 2011.
  • A discussion guide and 40 photos (depicting PA barriers and walking) facilitated dialogue.
  • Content analysis of audiotaped transcripts, notes, and field notes was performed.

Main Results:

  • Twenty-three participants developed 172 TMs organized into 12 themes.
  • Participants' ages averaged 50 years (± 6.3).

Conclusions:

  • Text messaging is an acceptable intervention for promoting PA and walking among adults.
  • Focus groups, aided by culturally relevant photos, can generate personalized and innovative TMs to encourage walking.
