In Vitro Fertilization01:24

In Vitro Fertilization

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a form of assisted reproductive technology where an egg is fertilized with sperm in a controlled laboratory environment before transferring the resulting embryo into the uterus. This process is designed to help individuals and couples experiencing difficulties conceiving.
The IVF process begins with ovarian stimulation, during which reproductive endocrinologists prescribe hormonal medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs instead of the single...

Summary

Acupuncture does not improve live birth or pregnancy rates in assisted reproductive technology (ART) cycles. This meta-analysis found no evidence of benefit for acupuncture in fertility treatments.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Integrative Medicine

Background:

  • Acupuncture is frequently used during assisted reproductive technology (ART) cycles.
  • Its effectiveness in improving live birth and pregnancy rates remains uncertain.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture as an adjunct therapy for male and female subfertility within ART cycles.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted.
  • Searches included multiple databases up to July 2013.
  • Twenty RCTs involving couples undergoing ART were included, comparing acupuncture with no treatment, placebo, or sham acupuncture.

Main Results:

  • The meta-analysis revealed no evidence that acupuncture improves live birth rates, whether performed around oocyte retrieval or embryo transfer.
  • Acupuncture showed no significant effect on pregnancy or miscarriage rates.
  • No significant side effects were reported for acupuncture treatment.

Conclusions:

  • Current evidence does not support the use of acupuncture to enhance live birth or pregnancy rates in assisted conception.
  • Further research may be needed to clarify any potential role, but existing data is inconclusive.
