Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. Summary

Over half of breast cancer patients use the internet for information, with younger, higher-income individuals more likely to do so. However, ethnic minority patients report more difficulties accessing reliable breast cancer information online.

Background:

The internet is a common source of health information for patients.
Understanding patient internet usage patterns is crucial for effective health communication.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the prevalence of internet use for breast cancer information.
To analyze demographic factors influencing internet use and associated problems.
To assess the perceived benefits and drawbacks of online information for breast cancer patients.

Main Methods:

A questionnaire-based study was conducted with 200 breast cancer patients.
Data collection occurred at the University Hospital of South Manchester.
The study period was May-June 2011, including patients treated within the last 5 years.

Main Results:

50.5% of breast cancer patients utilized the internet for information.
Younger patients and those with higher household incomes were more likely to use the internet.
While 73% found it beneficial, 31% experienced problems, with non-white patients reporting more issues (64%) than white patients (25%).

Conclusions:

A significant number of breast cancer patients face challenges with online information, especially ethnic minorities.
Healthcare providers should discuss internet use and information reliability with patients during consultations.
