Insights
High cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) is more common in women, yet cardiovascular disease is more prevalent in men. Sex hormones and genes likely influence these cardiovascular risk factors differently between sexes.
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular science
- Endocrinology
- Genetics
Context:
- Hypercholesterolemia is a significant cardiovascular disease risk factor, affecting women more than men.
- Cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevalence is higher in men despite lower hypercholesterolemia rates.
- Hypertension and glucose intolerance may be more frequent in men, contributing to CVD sex differences.
Purpose:
- To investigate the influence of sex hormones and sex-related genes on cardiovascular disease risk factors.
- To elucidate the mechanisms behind sex-based disparities in cardiovascular disease development.
Summary:
- This study examines the differential prevalence of cardiovascular disease risk factors between sexes.
- It explores the potential roles of sex hormones and sex-linked genes in modulating these risk factors.
- Understanding these factors is crucial for addressing atherosclerosis development.
Impact:
- Findings will aid in developing targeted strategies to reduce atherosclerosis.
- Provides insights into sex-specific cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment.
- Highlights the importance of considering hormonal and genetic factors in cardiovascular health.
Abstract:
Hypercholesterolemia, which is well known one of the important risk factor for cardiovascular disease, is more prevalence in women than men. However, cardiovascular disease is more prevalence in men than women. It is possible that men have more frequently hypertension and glucose intolerance than women. These may affect the sex difference in the cardiovascular disease prevalence quite a few. The feature of risk factors for cardiovascular disease may be affected by both sex hormone and sex related genes. To clarify the role of sex hormone and sex related genes in the risk factor for atherosclerosis will be very important to reduce the atherosclerosis developments in human.
