Summary

The quinoid-2', 5-dichloro-4'-nitrosalicylanilide (LDS) salt demonstrated molluscicidal effects against Oncomelania hupensis snails. Higher concentrations of LDS showed comparable efficacy to niclosamide ethanolamine salt (WPN) in field trials.

Area of Science:

  • Environmental Science
  • Parasitology
  • Chemical Efficacy Studies

Context:

  • Schistosomiasis control relies on managing snail intermediate hosts like Oncomelania hupensis.
  • Field evaluations are crucial for assessing the practical efficacy of molluscicides.

Purpose:

  • To assess the molluscicidal efficacy of quinoid-2", 5-dichloro-4"-nitrosalicylanilide (LDS) against Oncomelania hupensis in natural field settings.
  • To compare the effectiveness of LDS with a standard molluscicide, niclosamide ethanolamine salt (WPN).

Summary:

  • Field trials investigated LDS using immersion, insufflation, and powdering methods at various concentrations.
  • LDS at higher concentrations (0.4-0.8 g/m³ for immersion, 0.6-1.0 g/m² for other methods) exhibited comparable snail mortality rates to WPN (2 g/m³).

  • Lower concentrations of LDS showed reduced efficacy compared to WPN.
  • Impact:

    • Provides evidence for the potential application of LDS as a field-applicable molluscicide.
    • Suggests that optimized concentrations of LDS could be an effective alternative for Oncomelania hupensis control.
    • Highlights the need for further research into optimal application strategies and environmental impact assessments.
