Summary

Background:

Adolescence is a critical period for social development, particularly cognitive empathy.
Video games, as agent-based media, may not require cognitive empathy engagement.
Prolonged video game use during adolescence could impede empathy development.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the relationship between video game usage and cognitive empathy in adolescents.
To compare this relationship across different age groups.

Main Methods:

A survey was conducted across three age groups: adolescents (16-19), adults (37-41), and elders (58-62).
Data collected included self-reported time spent playing video games and cognitive empathy levels.

Main Results:

A significant negative association was found between time spent playing video games and cognitive empathy exclusively among adolescents.
No such association was observed in the adult and elder groups.

Conclusions:

Excessive video game engagement during adolescence may negatively impact the development of cognitive empathy.
This highlights the importance of considering the nature of media interaction (active engagement) rather than just content.
Cognitive empathy, a crucial social ability, warrants further research in the context of digital media use.
