Summary

Higher muscle mass does not necessarily mean better muscle quality. This study found that good muscle quality, not just mass, is key to avoiding functional impairments in older women.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between muscle mass and muscle quality in older women.
  • To determine how muscle mass and quality interact to influence functional impairments.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of data from 1219 women (≥75 years) from the Toulouse OSteoporose cohort study.
  • Assessment of body composition (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), handgrip, and knee extension strength.
  • Measurement of physical function using chair stand tests and gait speed, alongside self-reported functional difficulties.

Main Results:

  • Negative correlations were found between upper- and lower-body muscle quality and appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI).
