Background:

  • The nasolabial angle is a key facial aesthetic measurement.
  • Previous departmental analysis suggested narrow ranges for male (96°) and female (98°) nasolabial angles.
  • This study sought to refine ideal nasolabial angle standards using expert surgeon opinions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the ideal nasolabial angle based on expert rhinoplasty surgeon consensus.
  • To compare ideal nasolabial angles between male and female subjects.
  • To refine aesthetic guidelines for rhinoplasty procedures.

Main Methods:

  • Lateral photographs of 20 rhinoplasty patients (10 male, 10 female) were digitally altered.
  • Members of the Rhinoplasty Society evaluated altered images for aesthetic preference.
  • Raters selected the most aesthetically pleasing nasolabial angle and estimated its degree.

Main Results:

  • The ideal nasolabial angle range was determined to be 93.9–97.3° for males and 96.8–100.2° for females.
  • These findings indicate a closer range between sexes than previously reported.
  • Surgeons' estimations of the ideal angle were, on average, 2.76° larger than the actual angles.

  • Results align with previous findings of narrower sex-based differences in ideal nasolabial angles.
