Type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus: are they mutually exclusive?

Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T1DM and T2DM) show overlap. Autoantibodies found in T1DM appear in some T2DM patients, while insulin resistance is seen in T1DM patients, especially those overweight.

- Beta cell autoantibodies are present in some insulin-resistant T2DM patients.
- Insulin resistance can occur in overweight T1DM patients.
- No specific clinical features predict autoantibody positivity in T2DM.
