Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Equine Health
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Septic arthritis and osteomyelitis are severe conditions in horses.
  • Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for a positive prognosis.

Observation:

  • A 2-year-old gelding presented with severe (grade 4/5) right forelimb lameness.
  • Clinical, laboratory, and radiographic examinations suggested septic arthritis and osteomyelitis.

Findings:

  • Histopathology confirmed chronic arthritis and osteomyelitis.
  • Intralesional yeast, identified as Candida species, was present within the affected tissues.

Implications:

  • This case highlights Candida species as a potential causative agent of chronic septic arthritis and osteomyelitis in horses.
