Summary

Evidence linking endothelial dysfunction to tendinopathy remains limited. While nitric oxide (NO) plays a role in vascular health, current studies show no significant clinical improvement in tendinopathy patients treated with NO therapy.

Background:

  • Intrinsic factors, particularly vascularization and endothelial function, are increasingly recognized in tendinopathy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review the relationship between endothelial dysfunction and tendinopathy.
  • To investigate the role of nitric oxide (NO) in tendinopathy and tendon healing.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature search was conducted using keywords related to endothelial dysfunction, tendinopathy, and nitric oxide.
  • Included studies comprised both in vivo (animal and human) and in vitro evaluations.
  • A total of 21 relevant studies were identified and analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Current evidence directly linking tendinopathy and endothelial dysfunction is limited.
  • Treatment with NO did not yield significant improvements in clinical or functional assessments for tendinopathy patients.
  • No significant differences were observed between experimental groups and controls receiving conventional treatments.

Conclusions:

  • The direct relationship between tendinopathy and endothelial dysfunction requires further investigation.
  • Nitric oxide (NO) may serve as a marker for endothelial response to stress, but stronger evidence is needed.
