Context:

Assessing patient understanding of informed consent is vital in elective general surgery.
The study was conducted in the operating rooms of the San Jorge teaching hospital in Pereira.

Purpose:

To evaluate patient knowledge regarding informed consent before elective general surgery.
To identify deficiencies in patient understanding of the informed consent process.

Summary:

A study of 59 patients undergoing elective general surgery found that 50% had deficient or insufficient information about their informed consent form.
No association was found between patient knowledge and sociodemographic variables.

Impact:

Highlights the need for improved communication strategies to ensure patients truly understand informed consent.
Emphasizes moving beyond a mere signature to a meaningful patient comprehension of surgical procedures and consent.
