Population Growth00:57

Population Growth

Population size is dynamic, increasing with birth rates and immigration, and decreasing with death rates and emigration. In ideal conditions with unlimited resources, populations can increase exponentially, which plots as a J-shaped growth rate curve of population size against time. This type of curve is characteristic of newly-introduced invasive species, or populations that have suffered catastrophic declines and are rebounding.
Distributions to Estimate Population Parameter01:26

Distributions to Estimate Population Parameter

The accurate values of population parameters such as population proportion, population mean, and population standard deviation (or variance) are usually unknown. These are fixed values that can only be estimated from the data collected from the samples. The estimates of each of these parameters are sample proportion, the sample mean, and sample standard deviation (or variance). To obtain the values of these sample statistics, data are required that have particular distribution and central...
Prevalence and Incidence01:08

Prevalence and Incidence

In statistical epidemiology and health sciences, two essential metrics—prevalence and incidence—are fundamental for understanding disease dynamics within a population. These measures enable public health officials, epidemiologists, and researchers to assess the burden of diseases, allocate resources effectively, and design impactful public health policies and interventions.
Prevalence indicates the proportion of individuals in a population who have a specific disease or health condition at a...
Drug Dosing: Geriatric Patients01:15

Drug Dosing: Geriatric Patients

Elderly individuals encompass a diverse population with varying degrees of age-related physiological changes. Defining the elderly presents challenges, as the geriatric population is often arbitrarily categorized as individuals older than 65. However, many individuals in this group lead active and healthy lives, with an increasing number surpassing 85 years and falling into the older elderly category. Physiological changes associated with aging impact performance capacity and homeostatic...
Estimating Population Standard Deviation01:26

Estimating Population Standard Deviation

When the population standard deviation is unknown and the sample size is large, the sample standard deviation s is commonly used as a point estimate of σ. However, it can sometimes under or overestimate the population standard deviation. To overcome this drawback, confidence intervals are determined to estimate population parameters and eliminate any calculation bias accurately. However, this only applies to random samples from normally distributed populations. Knowing the sample mean and...
Assessment of the Gastrointestinal System II: Health Perception Pattern01:29

Assessment of the Gastrointestinal System II: Health Perception Pattern

Assessing the gastrointestinal (GI) system is a complex process that begins with collecting subjective data. This data, collected through patient interviews, provides crucial insights into the patient's health history, perception patterns, and lifestyle habits, all contributing significantly to GI health.
Health Perception Patterns
Health perception patterns offer valuable insights into a patient's lifestyle habits and how they may impact their GI health. These patterns include:

Summary

This study presents the first EQ-5D (EuroQol 5-Dimensions) Portuguese population norms. These health status benchmarks reveal that older individuals and women report poorer quality of life.

Area of Science:

  • Health Economics
  • Public Health
  • Quality of Life Research

Background:

  • The EQ-5D (EuroQol 5-Dimensions) is a standard preference-based measure for assessing health status.
  • Normative data are crucial for healthcare analysis, disease burden assessment, and international comparisons.
  • Portugal previously lacked published population norms for the EQ-5D.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To derive and present the first population norms for the EQ-5D in Portugal.
  • To establish a benchmark for health-related quality of life in the Portuguese general population.

Main Methods:

  • A random sample of 1,500 individuals from the Portuguese general population was surveyed via phone.
  • Data were stratified by age, gender, and region.
  • The Portuguese EQ-5D value set was applied to calculate the EQ-5D index.

Main Results:

  • Mean EQ-5D index values were calculated across various demographic groups (age, gender, marital status, education, region).
  • A clear trend of declining health status with increasing age was observed.
  • Women reported significantly worse health status compared to men, consistent with international findings.

Conclusions:

  • This study successfully generated Portuguese population norms for the EQ-5D.
  • These norms provide essential data for Portuguese policymakers, healthcare professionals, and researchers.
  • The data will aid in health policy planning, resource allocation, and evaluating treatment impacts on health status.
