Background:

Spontaneous membranous glomerulonephropathy (MCN) is infrequently observed in rats, unlike experimentally induced models.
This report documents a unique spontaneous MCN case in a male Hatano low-avoidance (LAA) strain rat.

Purpose of the Study:

To present a detailed case study of spontaneous MCN in a rat.
To investigate the pathological and immunological characteristics of the observed glomerulopathy.

Urinary screening for proteinuria.
Histological examination of renal glomeruli.

Western blot and indirect immunofluorescence for autoantibody detection.

Main Results:

The rat exhibited intense proteinuria and characteristic MCN histological findings, including hyaline deposits, IgG, IgM, and C3 deposition in glomeruli.
Electron microscopy revealed subepithelial dense deposits, podocyte foot process effacement, and glomerular basement membrane thickening.
The rat also had a fibrosarcoma and chronic lymphocytic pancreatitis, with evidence of an autoantibody against pancreatic components.

Conclusions:

The observed glomerulopathy is consistent with an early stage of membranous glomerulonephropathy.
The findings suggest a potential autoimmune etiology for spontaneous MCN in this rat, possibly linked to pancreatic antigens.
