Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Orthopedics
  • Rehabilitation Medicine

Background:

  • Assessing functional recovery after total hip replacement (THR) is crucial for patient outcomes.
  • Traditional clinical assessments can be subjective and lack detailed kinematic data.
  • Objective, quantitative gait analysis is needed to monitor THR rehabilitation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce a novel computer-based system for objective functional assessment in THR patients.
  • To evaluate the system's ability to capture hip and knee motion, gait parameters, and functional performance.
  • To compare post-operative functional recovery with pre-operative status and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Development of a computer system integrating flexible electrogoniometers for hip and knee motion.

  • Inclusion of foot switches and instrumented walking aids for comprehensive gait data.
  • Utilized fixed timing for deriving walking velocity, stride length, and cadence, with immediate data visualization.
  • Main Results:

    • The system successfully recorded kinematic data and gait parameters in 65 THR patients.
    • Significant improvements in range of motion, gait velocity, and cadence were observed post-surgery.
    • At 12 months post-operatively, functional performance remained restricted compared to normal subjects.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed computer-based system provides objective and immediate functional assessment for THR patients.
    • The system aids in identifying gait abnormalities and monitoring rehabilitation progress.
    • Long-term functional deficits persist post-THR, highlighting areas for further therapeutic intervention.
