Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Innovation
  • Retinal Surgery

Background:

  • Chromovitrectomy enhances visualization of intraocular tissues during vitreoretinal surgery.
  • Existing dyes have limitations in staining specific retinal layers.
  • Accurate identification of internal limiting membrane and epiretinal membrane is crucial for successful surgical outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess a new lutein-based dye for chromovitrectomy.
  • To evaluate its feasibility, advantages, and safety in human subjects.
  • To improve identification and removal of vitreous, internal limiting membrane, and epiretinal membrane.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective evaluation of 12 eyes undergoing pars plana vitrectomy with the novel dye.
  • Surgeon completed a questionnaire comparing the dye to existing options.

  • Histological evaluation of peeled membranes and comprehensive postoperative follow-up.
  • Main Results:

    • The dye facilitated staining of the posterior hyaloid/vitreous base and internal limiting membrane.
    • Epiretinal membrane staining was suboptimal.
    • All eyes showed improved visual acuity with no clinical or imaging toxicity.

    Conclusions:

    • The lutein-based dye enhances intraoperative identification of key structures during chromovitrectomy.
    • It offers a safe and effective option for improving visualization of the internal limiting membrane and posterior hyaloid.
    • Further refinement may be needed for optimal epiretinal membrane staining.
