    Background:

    • Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection.
    • Thrombocytopenia is a common complication in sepsis, but its prognostic value requires further elucidation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between thrombocytopenia and mortality in patients with sepsis.
    • To evaluate the predictive value of platelet count behavior, including drops and recovery, on sepsis outcomes.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 56 patients meeting sepsis criteria was analyzed.
    • Thrombocytopenia was defined as a platelet count < 150,000/mm³.
    • Platelet counts, APACHE II scores, and patient outcomes were assessed during hospitalization.

    Main Results:

    • Patients with thrombocytopenia (n=34) exhibited a 76.4% mortality rate compared to 40.9% in non-thrombocytopenic patients (RR 1.87, p=0.0163).
    • A >50% drop in platelet count from admission was associated with 93.3% mortality.
    • Failure of platelet count to recover in thrombocytopenic patients resulted in 100% mortality.

    Conclusions:

    • Thrombocytopenia is a significant predictor of mortality in septic patients.
    • Platelet count progression, specifically a >50% drop or lack of recovery, serves as a marker of poor prognosis in sepsis.
