Background:

  • A novel educational program, the small-group-discussion (SGD) program utilizing personalized video-based debriefing, was developed for basic life support (BLS) renewal training.
  • The current standard for BLS renewal education involves a practice-while-watching (PWW) program with standardized videos.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effectiveness of the new SGD program against the established PWW program in enhancing BLS skills.
  • To evaluate which educational approach yields superior improvements in BLS competency.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, cluster randomized study was conducted over six months.
  • Two groups of participants underwent BLS renewal training using either the SGD or PWW program.
  • Skill improvement was assessed using the modified Cardiff test and skill-reporting manikins.

Main Results:

  • Analysis included 2169 participants (1061 SGD, 1108 PWW).
  • No significant differences in pre-test compression or non-compression skills were observed between the groups.
