Anterior nasal packing after septoplasty increases pain without significant benefit. This study suggests challenging its routine use to improve patient recovery and quality of life following nasal surgery.

  • To assess its impact on patient quality of life and postoperative outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized prospective study involving 73 patients undergoing septoplasty.
  • Patients were assigned to receive or not receive anterior nasal packing postoperatively.
  • Postoperative pain, bleeding, and quality of life were assessed.

Main Results:

  • Patients with nasal packing reported more immediate postoperative pain and headache.
  • 75.7% of packed patients experienced moderate/intense pain during packing removal.
  • While bleeding was more frequent without packing, only one patient required it. All patients showed improved quality of life.

Conclusions:

  • Septoplasty effectively improves quality of life for patients with nasal obstruction.
  • Routine anterior nasal packing following septoplasty lacks proven benefits and should be reconsidered.
