[Multiple hydatid embolism: acute ischemia of the right lower limb. Apropos of a case]
Insights
Cardiac hydatidosis causing arterial embolisms can be effectively treated with embolectomy and subsequent medical management. Long-term monitoring is crucial to prevent recurrence of this rare cardiac condition.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Parasitology
- Vascular Surgery
Background:
- Cardiac hydatidosis is a rare parasitic infection caused by Echinococcus tapeworms.
- It can lead to serious complications, including arterial embolism due to cyst rupture or detachment of germinal layers.
Observation:
- A case of cardiac hydatidosis presenting with multiple arterial embolisms in various vascular territories, including the right popliteal artery, is reported.
- The patient underwent surgical embolectomy for the embolic event.
Findings:
- Embolectomy provided a convenient surgical approach for managing the acute embolic complication.
- A combined strategy of surgical intervention followed by medical treatment was employed to minimize the risk of recurrence.
Implications:
- This case highlights the importance of considering cardiac hydatidosis in the differential diagnosis of embolic events.
- Long-term, periodic medical follow-up (every 3-6 months for several years) is essential after treatment to ensure disease eradication and prevent recurrence.
Abstract:
This case report presents a cardiac hydatidosis with multiple embolisms on several vascular territories, such as right popliteal artery, which was treated by embolectomy. Convenience of surgical approach, followed by medical treatment, in order to avoid a new recurrence, and periodical controls every 3-6 months (at least) during several years after disease, was evaluated.
