Summary

Harmonic Focus™ and LigaSure® Precise devices are safe and effective for thyroid surgery. Harmonic Focus™ significantly reduced operative time compared to suture ligation, with no increased complications.

Background:

  • Advancements in thyroid surgery aim to improve vessel sealing and hemostasis.
  • New energy-based devices offer alternatives to traditional ligation techniques.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of Harmonic Focus™ and LigaSure® Precise in total thyroidectomy.
  • To compare outcomes of these devices against conventional suture ligation.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case-matched study of 240 total thyroidectomies (Oct 2008 - May 2010).
  • Patients divided into three groups: Harmonic Focus™ (n=80), LigaSure® Precise (n=80), and suture ligation (n=80).

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in demographics, gland weight, pathology, calcium levels, complications, or hospital stay.
  • Operative time was significantly shorter with Harmonic Focus™ (62.7±14.1 min) compared to suture ligation (72.7±13.6 min, p=0.019).

Conclusions:

  • Both Harmonic Focus™ and LigaSure® Precise are safe and efficient for total thyroidectomy.
  • Harmonic Focus™ demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in operative time versus conventional methods.
  • No increase in postoperative complications was observed with either device.
