A new social perspective on disability and its implications for rehabilitation

As disabled people become more active and vocal in asserting their rights, they are sharing important information about the experience of disability in our society. In fact, they are challenging the defintions and models of disability traditionally utilized in rehabilitation practice. This paper contrasts the traditional medical model of disability with a new interactional or socio-political model. The experience of disability is examined in the context of disabled people's minority group status. Also discussed are the efforts of disabled persons to fashion a positive identity and sense of cultural pride. Arguments are presented for addressing the social aspects of disability in rehabilitation.
