External Cephalic Version: Is it an Effective and Safe Procedure?

    Summary

External cephalic version (ECV) for breech presentation increases vaginal birth rates without negatively impacting maternal satisfaction. Women would recommend ECV, even if unsuccessful, and tolerate its side effects well.

    Area of Science:

    • Obstetrics and Gynecology
    • Maternal-Fetal Medicine
    • Perinatal Care

    Background:

    • Breech presentation at term complicates vaginal delivery.
    • External cephalic version (ECV) aims to convert breech to cephalic presentation.
    • Assessing maternal satisfaction is crucial for evaluating obstetric interventions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the acceptance and impact of external cephalic version (ECV) on maternal satisfaction.
    • To compare satisfaction levels between women who underwent ECV and those who had primary cesarean section.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective study of 131 women with term breech presentation.
    • Comparison of maternal satisfaction via questionnaire between ECV group (n=66) and non-ECV/primary CS group (n=65).

  • Analysis of successful ECV (n=33) versus unsuccessful ECV outcomes.
  • Main Results:

    • Women tolerated successful ECV side effects better than unsuccessful ECV (p < 0.001).
    • Successful ECV did not increase overall childbirth satisfaction compared to unsuccessful ECV (p = 0.37).
    • Women would repeat and recommend ECV (p = 0.003, p < 0.001); satisfaction higher after vaginal birth post-ECV vs. planned CS (p = 0.05).

    Conclusions:

    • Attempting ECV is a viable option for increasing vaginal birth rates in term breech presentations.
    • ECV does not negatively affect maternal satisfaction with childbirth.
    • Positive patient-reported outcomes support ECV as an acceptable intervention.
