Summary

Low pull headgear (LHG) therapy did not significantly alter head position in growing males with Class II malocclusion. Postural variables remained stable over 11-12 months in both treated and untreated groups.

Background:

  • Class II malocclusion is common in growing individuals.
  • Orthodontic interventions aim to correct skeletal and dental discrepancies.
  • Headgear is frequently used to modify maxillary growth and/or protraction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effect of low pull headgear (LHG) on head posture.
  • To compare cephalometric changes in head position between LHG users and an untreated control group.

Main Methods:

  • Lateral cephalograms of 30 males (aged 11 ± 1.5 years) treated with LHG for Class II malocclusion were analyzed.
  • Cephalograms from 25 untreated males (aged 11 ± 1.6 years) served as controls.
  • Four postural variables (NSL/CVT, NSL/OPT, CVT/HOR, OPT/HOR) were measured pre- and post-treatment/observation.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant changes in head position were observed within the LHG group (p > 0.05).
  • No statistically significant changes in head position were observed within the control group (p > 0.05).
  • There were no significant differences in head position changes between the LHG and control groups for any measured postural variable (p > 0.05).

Conclusions:

  • Low pull headgear therapy does not induce significant changes in head posture in growing males.
  • Head position remains relatively stable over an 11-12 month period, irrespective of LHG treatment.
  • Individual variability in postural changes exists, but treatment effects are not statistically significant.
