Summary

Robotic assisted laparoscopic left nephropexy was successfully performed in a 12-year-old female to treat symptomatic nephroptosis. This minimally invasive approach offers a viable solution for kidney fixation in pediatric patients following nephroureterectomy.

Preoperative ManagementThe primary goals of preoperative management in kidney transplantation are to optimize the patient’s metabolic state and prepare them for surgery through diet adjustments, necessary dialysis, and tailored medical treatment. This phase also involves comprehensive infection screening and patient education about the surgical procedure and postoperative care to improve outcomes and adherence.Medical ManagementA comprehensive evaluation is required for both the living donor...

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Urology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Robotic Surgery

Background:

  • Nephroptosis, or kidney prolapse, can cause significant flank pain and discomfort.
  • Partial nephroureterectomy, the removal of a portion of the kidney and ureter, can predispose patients to nephroptosis.
  • Symptomatic nephroptosis in pediatric patients requires effective treatment strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the technique and outcomes of robotic assisted laparoscopic left nephropexy.
  • To evaluate the feasibility of this minimally invasive approach in a pediatric patient.
  • To address symptomatic nephroptosis following partial nephroureterectomy.

Main Methods:

  • A 12-year-old female patient underwent robotic assisted laparoscopic left nephropexy.

  • The procedure involved fixation of the left kidney to prevent ptosis.
  • This was performed after a prior partial nephroureterectomy.
  • Main Results:

    • The robotic assisted laparoscopic procedure was technically successful.
    • The patient experienced resolution of symptoms associated with nephroptosis.
    • No immediate complications were reported.

    Conclusions:

    • Robotic assisted laparoscopic nephropexy is a safe and effective minimally invasive option for pediatric patients with symptomatic nephroptosis.
    • This technique can be successfully applied in the context of prior partial nephroureterectomy.
    • Further studies may explore long-term outcomes and broader application in pediatric urology.
