Background:

  • Winter sports like skiing and snowboarding carry inherent risks of injury.
  • Dental trauma is a potential consequence of accidents on ski slopes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the incidence of dental trauma among amateur skiers and snowboarders.
  • To investigate the patterns of protective gear usage, including mouthguards, in relation to dental injuries.

Main Methods:

  • A standardized questionnaire was administered to 500 participants (skiers and snowboarders).
  • Data collected included details of sustained injuries, accidents, and the use of protective equipment.
  • Interviews were conducted during the winter sports season from January to April 2008.

Main Results:

  • 2.2% of participants reported dental trauma. Frequent riders showed higher susceptibility (p < 0.001).
  • 33% experienced at least one accident, with males more affected (p = 0.031).
  • 67.4% used protective gear; snowboarders were better protected (p < 0.001). Only 2 of 11 with dental trauma used mouthguards.

Conclusions:

  • Skiing and snowboarding present a minimal risk of dental trauma.
  • Increased use of protective gear is observed, but mouthguard adoption remains low among injured individuals.
