Dimensions of Health and Illness01:21

Dimensions of Health and Illness

The factors influencing the health-illness continuum can be internal or external and may or may not be under conscious control. They are related to the following eight human dimensions, and each dimension is interrelated to one other.
Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection01:26

Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection

The hosts' susceptibility to infection depends on several factors. The integrity of the skin and mucous membranes helps protect the body against microbial attacks. When the skin is altered, the chance of infection, limb loss, and even death increases.
The integrity and count of the white blood cells help the body resist pathogens and fight infection. When impaired, it reduces the body's resistance to pathogens. The acidic pH levels of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary tracts, and skin create...

Stress and Mental Health01:30

Stress and Mental Health

Chronic stress profoundly affects mental health, significantly influencing mood, behavior, and overall quality of life. Research closely links chronic stress with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Ongoing exposure to stress can lead to physiological and psychological changes, initiating a cycle of emotional distress and maladaptive coping mechanisms.
Individuals with depression often experience challenges in both their personal and professional...

Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health
  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Ageing municipal employees face evolving workplace demands.
  • Understanding the impact of changing working conditions on employee health is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between changes in physical and psychosocial working conditions and subsequent sickness absence.
  • Focus on ageing municipal employees in Helsinki, Finland.

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal study with baseline (2000-2002) and follow-up (2007) surveys.
  • Linked sickness absence data (2007-2010) for 3739 employees.
  • Negative binomial regression analysis of physical and psychosocial working conditions.

Main Results:

  • Favorable changes in physical working conditions were associated with lower sickness absence.
  • Adverse changes in physical working conditions were linked to increased sickness absence.
  • Adverse changes in psychosocial conditions showed a slight increase in sickness absence risk.

Conclusions:

  • Changes in physical working conditions are a key factor in subsequent sickness absence.
  • Preventing deterioration and promoting improvement in working conditions can mitigate sickness absence.
