Engineering NLR immune receptors for broad-spectrum disease resistance

Abstract:
Two recent reports by Maekawa et al. and Narusaka et al. demonstrated the transfer of a nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat (NLR) family of immune receptors into evolutionarily diverged plants without causing adverse fitness consequences. The applications of NLRs in engineering durable and broad-spectrum resistance in plants are highlighted here.
