Insights
The Turkish version of the Test for Respiratory and Asthma Control in Kids (TRACK) questionnaire is reliable and valid for assessing asthma control in preschool children. This tool aids physicians in evaluating control levels and improving children's quality of life.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Pulmonology
- Clinical Assessment Tools
- Asthma Management
Background:
- The Test for Respiratory and Asthma Control in Kids (TRACK) questionnaire uniquely assesses both risk and impairment domains for preschool children's asthma, aligning with current guidelines.
- Previous research has not established the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the TRACK questionnaire.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the reliability, validity, and responsiveness of the Turkish translation of the TRACK questionnaire.
- To determine the suitability of the Turkish TRACK for assessing asthma control in preschool-aged children.
Main Methods:
- A cohort of 268 preschool children (69.8% boys) participated in the study.
- Caregivers completed the TRACK questionnaire at baseline, 1 month, and 3 months.
- Physicians assessed asthma control and treatment strategies using GINA guidelines at each visit.
Main Results:
- The Turkish TRACK demonstrated good internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's alpha: 0.74-0.76) and excellent test-retest reliability (0.90).
- Significant differences in TRACK scores were observed across different asthma control categories (p < 0.001).
- Optimal cut-off scores were identified: 80 for uncontrolled and 60 for very poorly controlled asthma.
Conclusions:
- The Turkish version of the TRACK questionnaire is a dependable and valid instrument for evaluating asthma control in Turkish preschool children.
- Implementing the Turkish TRACK can enhance clinical decision-making for asthma management and improve patient and caregiver quality of life.
Background:
Test for Respiratory and Asthma Control in Kids (TRACK) questionnaire is the first to measure both the risk and impairment domains of the current guidelines in preschool children. We aimed to measure the reliability, validity and responsiveness of the Turkish version of the TRACK.
Methods:
A total of 268 children (69.8% boys) were included in the study. Caregivers responded to three individual TRACK questionnaires, at each clinical visit (baseline, 1st month, and 3rd month). At each visit, physicians determined the control level and the treatment strategy based on the GINA guideline recommendations.
Results:
The internal consistency reliability of the Turkish version of the TRACK questionnaire was found to be 0.74, 0.74, and 0.76 at each of the three visits, respectively (reliability statistics, Cronbach's alpha). There was a significant difference between the mean TRACK scores of the patients in different asthma control status categories (p < 0.001). The test-retest reliability in stable patients was 0.90. The optimal cut-off scores according to the Youden index were 80 and 60 points for uncontrolled and very poorly controlled children, respectively.
Conclusion:
The Turkish version of the TRACK is an accurate and reliable tool for evaluating asthma control status among preschool Turkish children. Its widespread use may help physicians correctly assess control levels among children and may improve the quality of life for both patients and their caregivers.

Pulmonary Function Tests are crucial diagnostic tools for assessing respiratory function, particularly in patients with chronic respiratory disorders. They comprehensively evaluate lung volumes, ventilatory function, breathing mechanics, diffusion, and gas exchange. These tests help diagnose pulmonary diseases and play a significant role in monitoring disease progression, evaluating disability, and assessing response to therapy.
