Background:

  • Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition with significant impact.
  • Functional textiles with antimicrobial and antipruritic properties are explored as complementary AD treatments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and assess the effectiveness and safety of functional textiles in managing atopic dermatitis.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of three biomedical databases.
  • Included eight randomized controlled trials and five observational studies.
  • GRADE approach for evidence and recommendation grading; meta-analyses performed where applicable.

Main Results:

  • Silver textiles showed improvements in SCORAD, symptoms, and reduced Staphylococcus aureus colonization.
  • Silk textiles demonstrated improvements in SCORAD and symptoms.
  • Borage oil and EVOH fiber showed limited specific improvements; no safety concerns reported for any textile.

Conclusions:

  • A weak recommendation for functional textiles in AD treatment is suggested due to low-quality evidence.
  • Further high-quality studies with longer follow-up are required to confirm efficacy and guide clinical practice.
