Visual Agnosia

Visual agnosia is a condition characterized by the inability to recognize visually presented objects despite having normal vision. For instance, a person with visual agnosia can describe the shape and color of an object but cannot identify or name it. Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate executive dysfunction using the antisaccade (AS) task in normal elderly (NE), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and Alzheimer's disease (AD) groups.
  • To explore the relationship between AS task performance and cortical thinning in brain regions associated with AD.
  • To compare AS performance with standard neuropsychological measures of executive function.

Main Methods:

  • Eye movements were recorded during an AS task in 182 participants (118 NE, 36 MCI, 28 AD).
  • Neuropsychological tests assessed executive function.
  • Brain MRI scans were analyzed to determine cortical thickness in 9 'AD signature' regions.
