Summary

Primary intracerebral malignant lymphoma presents with fluctuating tumor behavior. While outcomes are often poor, some patients experience long-term survival and good quality of life with multimodal treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Neuro-oncology
  • Hematology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Primary intracerebral malignant lymphoma (ICML) is a rare brain tumor.
  • ICML often exhibits aggressive behavior and poor prognosis.

Observation:

  • Seven patients with histologically confirmed ICML were studied.
  • Tumors demonstrated unpredictable growth, with transient regressions and new lesion development.
  • Clinical and radiological heterogeneity was noted.

Findings:

  • Overall survival was unfavorable, but two patients achieved long-term survival (≥3 years).
  • One long-term survivor maintained a good quality of life.
  • Multimodal therapy (surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, steroids) was employed.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • ICML management requires tailored, multimodal approaches.
  • Prognostic factors and characteristic presentations warrant further investigation.
  • The potential for long-term survival in select ICML cases should be considered in treatment planning.
