Hepatitis

Hepatitis is an inflammatory condition of the liver most commonly caused by hepatotropic viruses (A–E), though non-infectious causes such as alcohol and drugs also exist.Hepatitis AHepatitis A virus (HAV) is a non-enveloped RNA virus of the Picornaviridae family. It is primarily transmitted via the fecal-oral route, typically through ingestion of contaminated food or water. After ingestion, HAV enters the bloodstream through the oropharynx or intestinal epithelium and reaches the liver. The...
Diseases of the Liver and Gallbladder01:26

Diseases of the Liver and Gallbladder

Liver and gallbladder diseases are a significant health concern, with prominent conditions including cirrhosis, hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and gallstones. Jaundice is a common manifestation of liver and biliary disease.
Cirrhosis is characterized by the scarring of hepatic lobules in the liver, which are replaced by fibrous tissue, affecting the liver's normal functioning. NAFLD, on the other hand, is caused by an excessive build-up of fat in the liver, not related to...

Summary

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is more common in males, with Hepatitis C virus (HCV) as the leading cause. Chemoembolization offered the longest median survival for HCC patients.

Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Oncology
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a significant global health concern.
  • Hepatitis C virus (HCV) and Hepatitis B virus (HBV) are major etiological factors.
  • Understanding HCC epidemiology and treatment outcomes is crucial for improving patient survival.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze epidemiological, etiological, treatment, and survival data for HCC patients.
  • To evaluate outcomes associated with different treatment modalities for HCC.
  • To identify prognostic factors influencing survival in HCC patients.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 150 HCC patient records (March 2004-December 2010).
  • Descriptive statistics for patient characteristics and disease status (Child-Pugh criteria).

  • Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox regression for prognostic factor assessment.
  • Main Results:

    • HCC predominantly affects males (3:1 ratio) with HCV as the most common etiology (45%).
    • Chemoembolization showed the longest median survival (27 months).
    • Over half of patients (53%) were diagnosed at advanced stages, receiving palliative treatment.

    Conclusions:

    • HCC incidence and etiology (male predominance, HCV) align with Western European patterns.
    • Chemoembolization demonstrates superior median survival among evaluated treatments.
    • Early diagnosis through enhanced screening programs is vital to improve HCC patient outcomes.
