Summary

Platelet serotonin uptake is often reduced in depression. However, this study found no difference in platelet serotonin uptake in patients with post-stroke depression compared to controls.

Background:

  • Depression is a common and severe complication following stroke (cerebrovascular accident; CVA).
  • Reduced serotonin (5-HT) uptake into platelets is a known biomarker for functional depression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate platelet serotonin (5-HT) uptake in patients with depression following a cerebrovascular accident (CVA).

Main Methods:

  • Blood samples were collected from 16 medication-free patients who had experienced a CVA 6-12 months prior.
  • Platelet 5-HT uptake was measured in these patients.
  • Seven depressed patients were compared with age- and sex-matched hospital controls.
