Understanding animal visual cognition is crucial for comparative psychology.
Adaptive testing procedures offer novel insights into cognitive processes.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate visual search strategies in pigeons using an adaptive, open-ended test.
To identify key visual parameters influencing search performance in avian subjects.

Main Methods:

A genetic algorithm adapted stimulus parameters based on pigeon accuracy.
Pigeons performed an intermediate brightness search task with evolving visual displays.
Six parametric variables (genes) controlled display composition.

Main Results:

Element size and number of distractors were the most significant factors for search accuracy.
Distractor brightness, element shape, and spacing had secondary effects.
Pigeons converged on a stable set of conditions (psychological attractor) irrespective of initial settings.

Conclusions:

Pigeon visual cognition demonstrates adaptive strategy selection in complex search tasks.
Adaptive, subject-driven experimentation is a valuable tool for studying cognition in animals and humans.
