Area of Science:

  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Gastrointestinal Surgery
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Pancreatic surgery is complex, demanding specialized expertise.
  • Laparoscopic pancreatic surgery requires advanced laparoscopic skills.
  • Adoption of laparoscopic techniques in pancreatic surgery is growing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the advantages and disadvantages of laparoscopic pancreatic surgery.
  • To assess the current evidence for laparoscopic pancreatic procedures.
  • To identify areas requiring further research in the field.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of existing studies on laparoscopic pancreatic surgery.
  • Analysis of prospective randomized studies for acute pancreatitis.
  • Examination of single-center experiences in pancreatic resections.

Main Results:

  • Laparoscopic surgery is established for benign/premalignant lesions of the pancreatic body and tail.
  • Evidence suggests decreased postoperative pain, narcotic use, and hospital stay.
  • Laparoscopic pancreatic head resection is limited to experienced centers.

Conclusions:

  • Laparoscopic pancreatic surgery shows promise, particularly for specific tumor types.
  • Prospective trials are essential to validate safety and efficacy for pancreatic neoplasms.
  • Further research is needed to establish laparoscopic resective surgery for malignant tumors.
