Background:

Accurate death certification is crucial for public health surveillance and vital statistics.
Physician knowledge and practices regarding death certification vary globally.
Understanding these factors in Qatar is essential for improving data quality.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the current level of knowledge and practice of death certification among physicians in Qatar.
To identify barriers and challenges faced by physicians in completing death certificates accurately.

Main Methods:

A cross-sectional study was conducted.
A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from 317 randomly selected physicians.
Assessed knowledge of eligible certifiers, referral conditions, and self-reported difficulties.

Main Results:

Only 22.7% of physicians received formal training in death certification.
Significant knowledge gaps exist regarding eligible certifiers (60%) and referral conditions (37%).
Common challenges include complex cases (47.3%), lack of training (43.5%), and unclear terminology (39.6%).
Case scenario analysis revealed high error rates: 21.5% correct cause of death, 53.2% major errors, 62.8% minor errors.

Conclusions:

Inadequate training is a primary contributor to poor death certificate completion in Qatar.
There is a clear need for targeted educational and administrative interventions.
Improving physician training is vital for enhancing the accuracy of death certification.
