Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (BD) show impaired affective prosody. While schizophrenia deficits were significant, BD performance was intermediate, suggesting milder impairments in BD patients.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Psychiatry
- Clinical Psychology
Background:
- Affective prosody deficits are well-documented in schizophrenia.
- Limited research exists on affective prosody in bipolar disorder (BD).
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate affective prosody performance in schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and BD.
- To compare these patient groups with healthy controls (HC) using a standardized assessment.
Main Methods:
- Employed the Comprehensive Affective Testing System (CATS) to assess four affective prosody subtests.
- Compared 54 schizophrenia, 11 schizoaffective, and 43 BD patients against 112 HC.
Main Results:
- Schizophrenia patients exhibited a 10% reduction in accuracy on two subtests compared to HC.
- Bipolar disorder patients showed intermediate performance between schizophrenia and HC.
- Auditory hallucination severity correlated with task performance across patient groups.
Conclusions:
- Both schizophrenia and BD demonstrate reduced affective prosody, with BD deficits being less severe than in schizophrenia.
- Schizoaffective disorder results require cautious interpretation due to small sample size.
- Findings contribute to understanding emotional processing in psychiatric disorders.
