Summary

Two cases of thymic cysts were incidentally discovered via chest X-ray. These prevascular masses presented as thin-walled, low-density lesions on CT scans, with MRI revealing a septum in one instance.

Area of Science:

  • Thoracic imaging
  • Diagnostic radiology
  • Medical imaging

Background:

  • Thymic cysts are rare mediastinal masses.
  • Incidental findings on chest radiography are common.
  • Prevascular location is characteristic of thymic lesions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the imaging characteristics of thymic cysts.
  • To highlight the utility of CT and MRI in diagnosing thymic cysts.
  • To report on two incidentally discovered cases of thymic cysts.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of two cases with thymic cysts.
  • Analysis of chest X-ray, CT, and MRI findings.
  • Correlation of imaging features with anatomical location and morphology.

Main Results:

  • Chest X-ray revealed unexpected masses in the prevascular space.
  • CT demonstrated thin-walled, water-low density masses.
  • MRI provided additional detail, visualizing a septum in one case not clearly seen on CT.

Conclusions:

  • Thymic cysts can be incidentally detected by chest X-ray.
  • CT and MRI are valuable for characterizing these lesions.
  • Imaging features can aid in differentiating thymic cysts from other prevascular masses.
