Burn Injuries01:22

Burn Injuries

Burn injuries occur when the skin and underlying tissues are damaged due to exposure to heat, electricity, chemicals, radiation, or friction. They can vary in severity, from minor superficial burns to severe deep burns that can be life-threatening.
The damage results in the death of skin cells, which can lead to a massive loss of fluid. Dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and renal and circulatory failure follow, which can be fatal. Burn patients are treated with intravenous fluids to offset...

Flail Chest-II

Managing flail chest, a condition characterized by a segment of the chest wall moving independently from the rest of the thoracic cage, requires a comprehensive approach. It includes a thorough assessment of the patient's condition, a diagnostic evaluation to determine the extent of the injury, and the implementation of appropriate medical interventions tailored to the individual's needs.

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Reconstructive Surgery
  • Burn Management

Background:

  • Severe flame burns pose significant challenges in hand reconstruction.
  • Preserving digital function after extensive tissue loss is critical for patient quality of life.

Observation:

  • A 22-year-old male presented with third- to fourth-degree flame burns affecting all fingers of the right hand.
  • Necrotic tissue removal and amputation of carbonized segments were performed.
  • The thumb was reconstructed using a paraumbilical tubular flap, and other fingers with an abdominal wall marsupial flap.

Findings:

  • Wound healing was achieved within 50 days post-injury.
  • The remaining digits were successfully salvaged.
  • Four months post-surgery, grip strength was 23.6 kg, and the first web span was 53°, enabling near-complete activities of daily living.

Implications:

  • This reconstructive approach demonstrates the potential for restoring hand function after severe burn injuries.
  • Flap reconstruction techniques are vital for salvaging digits and improving functional outcomes in burn patients.
  • Successful hand reconstruction significantly enhances a patient's ability to perform daily activities and improves overall quality of life.
